HISTORY OF LINCOLN FIRE COMPANY

In the latter part of 1928, there were two serious fires in the Cedar Heights area of Whitemarsh Township.  One fire was at the Gillinger's house on Roberts Ave with the unfortunate death of a baby.  The other fire was at Mrs. Bacon's house on Hillcrest Ave that resulted in costly damage.  After these two incidents, the residents of the Cedar Heights area got together and decided to start their own fire company.  One of the founders was a man by the name Robert "Peg" Wright.

Peg Wright played the accordion and he would play it on Roberts Ave were other men would meet up with him.  Some of the other men who would meet up were William Stayton, Louis Isaacson and Charles Wedenburg.  These men would talk about plans for their fire house and began trying to find a location for the fire house.  William Stayton had just finished building a garage behind his home on Roberts Ave.  He told the men that they could use his garage for a fire house.  Now the men had a fire house but no fire apparatus.  The George Clay Fire Company of West Conshohocken gave the men of the Cedar Heights Fire Company the "Galloping Goose".  The next thing they needed was a name for their new fire company.

The men got together at a meeting to discuss a name for the fire house.  After they took a vote on several options, they decided upon Lincoln Fire Company.  The fire company received it's Charter in June 1929.
